Sam Johnson Chapter 270

Operation Helping Hand

Duanne Nations passed away last year.
For some time now, Doyle Dykes has been giving help to a new member.  Duanne Nations is a proud veteran with numerous problems.  He can't see, he has diabetes and he can't walk.  Doyle started by getting him some audio books to listen to.  After many weeks of making phone calls to a number of organizations he finally spoke to someone at the United Way.  They paid over $1,100.00 to have a new wheelchair ramp installed on the front of Duanne's home so that he can get out in case of fire or a doctors appointment.

Even though he can't see, one of the things that Duanne wanted the most was the Korean War Commemorative Medallion.  Again Doyle went to work and was able to secure one for him.  It is now one of his most prized possessions.

The following are some photos taken by Duanne's son Doug.

Dear Members of Korean War Vets Assoc. CH270;

            I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude to one of your members and the work of your organization.

            Doyle Dykes has been a real Godsend to my Father and our Family.

            My Father underwent open heart surgery about a year and a half ago. He was 80% wheelchair bound before his operation and with all the medical problems he suffers from, is not doing well now. He has not taken a single step on his own since May 28th, 2003, the day of the operation and is now bedridden. Being in this condition and with cataracts on top of everything else, his spirits are at the worst they have ever been.

            Since my Dad met Doyle it has lifted his spirits having someone in his life he can relate most of his life experiences with, not to mention all the things Doyle has done to fill my Dads day with other than just sitting in bed waiting for one of us to have time for him.

            Doyle has helped extensively with directing and assisting us on VA matters, i.e. getting medals reissued for Dad that he never even knew he was to be awarded,  relentlessly searching for a way to get a wheelchair ramp put in at their residence in Mesquite, the books on tape he set up for him since he can not see much anymore, and last but not least, the shaved ice he brings by for Mom and Dad from time to time along with the phone calls, just to see how he is doing and chat a while.

            In summary, my hats off to Doyle and your Organization, please keep up the good work.  Your time and work definitely makes a difference in peoples lives.

Sincerely,

Doug Nations
